Keep Calm and Fix Bayonets T-Shirt
Morale Patch
The order that came before every redcoat charge. Fix bayonets. Two words that, on a parade ground or a battlefield, meant something specific and final — the firefight phase was ending and the cold-steel phase was about to begin. For the British Army of the Victorian and Edwardian era, the order most famously fell from the lips of Color Sergeant Frank Bourne in Stanley Baker's Zulu (1964), standing in the doorway of the mission hospital at Rorke's Drift, January 22-23, 1879, with one hundred and fifty British and colonial soldiers of the 24th Regiment of Foot facing roughly four thousand Zulu warriors. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded for that single action — the most ever for any single engagement in British military history. The rifles in their hands were Martini-Henry Mk II breechloaders, firing the heavy .577/450 black-powder cartridge, paired with the long socket bayonet that turned every rifle into an eighteen-inch reach of steel. The "Keep Calm and..." framing was added to the British cultural lexicon during WWII as part of the Ministry of Information's morale posters. Together, the combination — the Edwardian poster sensibility plus the Victorian-era bayonet order plus Bourne's stoic delivery — captures something very specifically British: cold competence in the face of overwhelming odds, with no time for theatrics.
This shirt is built for British military history readers, Zulu film fans, Martini-Henry collectors, Boer War and colonial military buffs, Lee-Enfield SMLE owners, .303 reloaders, Commonwealth military reenactors, bayonet collectors, and anyone who's ever quoted Color Sergeant Bourne with the perfect deadpan delivery. Part of the British Commonwealth / Martini-Henry cluster — pair it with our Pooh Martini Henry, SMLE Lee-Enfield, British .303 Ammo Can, Rule .303 Breaker Morant, or British Broad Arrow shirts and hats for a deep dive into Empire-era arms.
