Designed in Belgium by Dieudonné Saive at Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal and adopted in 1953, the FAL — Fusil Automatique Léger, or "Light Automatic Rifle" — became the standard battle rifle of roughly 90 NATO and allied nations, earning FN's now-legendary marketing slogan: "The Right Arm of the Free World." Chambered in 7.62×51mm NATO and built for accuracy, reliability, and serious stopping power, the FAL saw service from the jungles of Vietnam (with Australian forces) to the Falklands War (where both sides carried it), Northern Ireland, the Suez Crisis, and Cold War flashpoints across three continents. The British called it the L1A1 SLR. The Canadians called it the C1. Whatever the markings, the rifle was the same: long, deliberate, hard-hitting, and built like a Belgian bank vault.
