The .30 Carbine M1 was designed by Winchester and adopted by the U.S. Army in 1941 as a lightweight semi-automatic alternative to the heavier Garand for officers, support troops, vehicle crews, and paratroopers — five pounds, fifteen rounds in a detachable box magazine, chambered in the punchy .30 Carbine cartridge, and built around a clever short-stroke gas piston designed by David Marshall Williams (the convict-turned-gun-designer of Carbine Williams fame). Over six million M1 Carbines were produced during WWII by ten different manufacturers — Winchester, Inland, Underwood Elliott-Fisher, IBM, Saginaw Steering Gear, Quality Hardware, National Postal Meter, Standard Products, Rock-Ola (yes, the jukebox company), and the rare Irwin-Pedersen. Of those ten, Inland Manufacturing Division of General Motors produced about 2.6 million — roughly 43% of the entire M1 Carbine output — making the Inland receiver stamp the most common, most authentic, and most often-found marking on a collector's M1 Carbine.
