Quality Hardware & Machine Corporation of Chicago, Illinois produced approximately 359,000 M1 Carbines for the U.S. Army between September 1943 and June 1944 — roughly six percent of total wartime carbine output. Like all the M1 Carbine prime contractors, Quality Hardware was a non-arms-industry manufacturer pulled into the war effort and converted to firearm production: in this case, a Chicago machine shop that made die-casting equipment in peacetime, then retooled to produce one of the most distinctive small arms of the Second World War. Quality Hardware carbines saw service alongside Inland, Winchester, Underwood, IBM, and the other prime contractors — issued to paratroopers, officers, vehicle crews, signal and support troops across every theater of WWII.
