The arsenal that armed America for one hundred and ninety-one years. Founded by act of Congress on April 2, 1794 at the recommendation of George Washington — who personally selected the site at Springfield, Massachusetts during the Revolutionary War as the location for the new nation's primary munitions depot — the Springfield Armory was the United States' first national arsenal and remained the country's premier small arms manufacturer until its gates closed for good in 1968. For nearly two centuries, every major American military rifle came off Springfield Armory machines: the Model 1795 musket (the first standardized U.S. military firearm), the Model 1842 (the last U.S. musket and first percussion arm), the Model 1855, the Trapdoor Springfield Model 1873 (the rifle of Custer's last stand and the Indian Wars), the Krag-Jørgensen Model 1892 (America's first smokeless-powder service rifle), the M1903 Springfield (the rifle of the AEF in WWI and Pacific Marines in WWII), the M1 Garand (4 million produced — the rifle General Patton called "the greatest battle implement ever devised"), and the M14 (the last battle rifle the arsenal would build before the M16 replaced it and the arsenal itself).

Today the original Springfield Armory campus is a National Historic Site — the foundry buildings, the proof house, the receiver shop, the inspection rooms where John Garand worked through the 1930s perfecting his rifle, all preserved by the National Park Service. For M1 Garand collectors, CMP match shooters, and milsurp historians, the Springfield Armory cartouche stamped into a rifle stock isn't just a maker's mark — it's a link back to the institution that built the American small arms tradition from the muzzle-loading musket through the semi-automatic battle rifle. This hat puts that legacy on your head: not the modern Springfield Armory Inc. of Geneseo, Illinois (who licensed the name in 1974), but the original federal arsenal — Washington's arsenal, Garand's arsenal, the arsenal whose receivers are still on the line at every CMP Garand match in America.

Built for M1 Garand collectors, CMP shooters, M1903 Springfield owners, Trapdoor and Krag enthusiasts, M14 and M1A shooters, John Garand devotees, milsurp researchers, American military history readers, National Park Service visitors who've walked the Springfield Armory grounds, fathers passing rifles down to sons, and anyone who's ever traced a Springfield Armory serial number back to the year and month of manufacture.
