Rule .303 Breaker Morant Movie Hat

"Rule .303." Two words from Bruce Beresford's Breaker Morant (1980) that have become shorthand for the gulf between sanitized rules of engagement written in London and the actual rules of engagement that govern men in a firefight. Asked under what authority his men had operated against Boer commandos in the African veldt, Edward Woodward's Lt. Harry Morant told the court-martial that they followed Rule .303 — the caliber of the Long Lee-Enfield rifles British and Commonwealth troops carried, the only rule that mattered when they were two thousand miles from a comfortable courtroom and being shot at by guerrillas who didn't observe Geneva conventions either. The line worked because every soldier who's ever been there understood it. The film made it canon.
