"As you went on, we got the orders, sir. From you. Personally." Edward Woodward as Lt. Harry "Breaker" Morant defending himself in the courtroom scene of Bruce Beresford's Breaker Morant (1980), the Australian New Wave classic that turned a forgotten Second Boer War court-martial into one of the most quoted military films ever made. Asked under what rules of engagement his men had operated in the African veldt, Morant's answer became the line: Rule .303 — the caliber of the Long Lee-Enfield rifles British and Commonwealth troops carried, the only rule that mattered when you were being shot at by Boer commandos two thousand miles from a sanitized courtroom in London.
The real Harry Morant was an Australian-born horseman, poet, and soldier serving with the Bushveldt Carbineers in the Transvaal in 1901. After the combat death of a fellow officer, Morant retaliated with the summary execution of nine Afrikaner POWs. He was court-martialed, found guilty, and executed by firing squad on February 27, 1902 — drawn from the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Despite the conviction, Morant has become a folk hero in Australia, the subject of plays, books, and Beresford's award-winning film. The story endures because the questions it raises — about command responsibility, asymmetric warfare, and what soldiers owe their officers when their officers may not have told them the truth — never go away. This shirt is built for Lee-Enfield owners, Australian military history readers, Boer War history buffs, classic film enthusiasts, military justice scholars, .303 reloaders, military veterans who appreciate hard films about hard subjects, and anyone who's ever found themselves wondering what they would have done in the Bushveldt in 1901.
